Connecting Through Genuine Engagement: Listening Well

Written by Scott Oltmans

In today’s busy world, listening seems to get drowned out by the noise of our daily lives. But there is something that can make a difference in communication, and that is to listen well. It's what makes connections meaningful, whether you're talking with your friend, co-worker, boss, or a group of people.

Being Present

Listening isn't just about hearing words; it's about being there with the person as they are talking. It's about showing them that you care and what’s being said matters. Maybe a friend is sharing something they are experiencing, or co-workers are bouncing ideas around. Being a good listener makes people feel heard and respected.

Feeling What They Feel

One benefit of listening well is that you start to pick up on more than just their words. You begin to feel what the other person feels, to understand where they're coming from. It helps you to connect with people on a deeper level and feel what they are going through. It’s a term we call empathy. To step into another’s shoes and experience the world from their perspective.

Having a Real Chat

Conversations happen when everyone's engaged, when you're not just waiting for your turn to talk but listening and responding to what the other person is saying. That's when the real connection takes place.

Knocking Down Barriers

There are always barriers in the way, distractions, biases, time, etc. But when we're aware of those roadblocks, we can do our best to break them down. The key is being aware. By listening with an open mind and a kind heart, we can build bridges and create connections that bring us closer.

Making it a Habit

So, how do we get better at this whole listening thing? Well, it's like any skill—it takes practice. Start by slowing down and tuning in to the people around you. Show them you're listening by making eye contact. Don’t just repeat what they say; ask questions about what they are saying, and find the meaning behind their words.

Let's Connect

In a noisy world, listening is like a breath of fresh air. It's how we find common ground, understand each other better, and build lasting relationships. So embrace the art of listening, and together, let's create a world where everyone feels heard, valued, and respected.
